A new smart meters box can be used to monitor the usage of smart meters in homes and businesses and is currently being installed in California.
A smart meter is a device that provides a signal to an electrical system that can monitor a home or business’s usage and make adjustments based on what it’s used for.
The new smart box, which is expected to be installed by the end of the year, will provide real-time monitoring for the meters to help people understand their usage, said Kevin Toth, director of the Smart Meter Certification Program at the American Council for Testing and Materials.
The meters will also provide real time information about the use of the meters and the conditions in which the meters are being used, including how long the meters remain in use, how much power they are consuming and the amount of CO2 they produce, Toth said.
The program has received an $8.4 million grant from the Energy Department and is part of the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Smart Meter Challenge.
The EIA has awarded contracts for more than 200 smart meters over the past year.
